Abstract
The interaction between 2-naphtholate ions and the cationic surfactants cetylpyridinium chloride and cetyltri- methylammonium bromide in aqueous solution has been studied using u.v.absorption, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Complexation has been studied as a function of pH, ionic strength and temperature. Various methods have been tested to analyse equilibrium data, and the Hill treatment has been shown to to be most convenient. Thermodynamic parameters obtained from this are comparable with data from other techniques. With cetylpyridinium chloride and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, complexation starts at concentrations lower than the c.m.c. of pure surfactant, and there are indications that there may be submicellar surfactant naphtholate aggregates. In the cetylpyridinium case the enthalpy values suggest that there is substantial charge-transfer interaction contributing to the binding in these species. In addition, above the c.m.c. naphtholate is solubilised by surfactant micelles in both cases. Fluorescence enhancement above the c.m.c. in the cetyltrimethylammonium naphtholate case suggests that the anion is solubilised with its naphthalene ring sitting inside the micellar structure.
