Abstract
In this lecture my aim is to trace the development of some basic ideas and applications relating to biological effects of ultrasound, and of methods for characterizing exposure. Only a part of the subject can be treated here. Excellent sources for further reading include books by El’piner (1964), Dunn and O’Brien (1976) and Wells (1977), and also a review paper by Fry (1979).
