Occurrence in Utero, at Birth, and after Delivery

  • Chapter
Perinatal Asphyxia

Abstract

The cause of death from asphyxia is explained as a lack of oxygenation or insufficient oxygenation (hypoxia). If the asphyxia is prolonged and there is an inadequate blood supply to major organs, particularly the brain (ischemia), causing lesions in the brain and/or brain hemorrhage, then the baby affected by asphyxia is at particular risk. This can occur in intrauterine life, at the time of delivery, or shortly after delivery, affecting the newborn baby.
