Obstetric and Medical Intervention

  • Chapter
Perinatal Asphyxia

Abstract

Much of the material discussed in this chapter is based on the pioneering work of Caldeyro-Barcia (1975), who originated much of today’s technology for fetal monitoring. Caldeyro-Barcia stresses three possible sources of intrapartum risk to the newborn (Table 17):

  1. 1.

The risk of early rupture of membranes (ROM).

  2. 2.

Inadequate use of oxytocin to stimulate uterine contraction.

  3. 3.

The position of the mother during labor.
