Abstract

The International Classification of the Epilepsies, revised in 1981, has been successful in replacing the numerous terms commonly utilized in clinical practice.1 An advantage of this classification is that it provides a synthesis of the electrophysiological and clinical aspects of seizures. This is an extremely important feature, inasmuch as various types of seizures may appear clinically identical. However, there are wide variations in underlying pathology and choice of drugs for treatment. Table I provides an outline of the major types of seizures, and a compendium of some of the older clinical terms. Table II outlines the important associated features.
