Abstract

The nature and acceptance of the sense of “self” as a psychological concept and mental construct have gone through many metamorphoses. Cohen1 observed that from Aristotle’s de Anima through the metapsychology of Descartes, “the self was the locus of feelings, initiatives, and passions.” He then commented that “after falling into disrepute in certain circles, the concept of the self has recently been resurrected in psychoanalysis, invigorated by the new type of observations which clinical inquiry provides.”
