Abstract
Of the groups of the Periodic Table, IV is perhaps the most interesting to the NMR spectroscopist since with the exception of germanium each of its members has at least one spin-1/2 isotope of moderate or good receptivity. Notwithstanding this, previous reviews have tended to concentrate on only a single element, and relatively little attempt has been made to give comparative treatments. This is perhaps understandable in the case of carbon with its different chemical behavior and its importance in organic chemistry, but is harder to justify for the other elements, and the present chapter now aims at providing an account of the NMR of silicon, germanium, tin, and lead which emphasizes the similarities. In this connection germanium presents a problem owing to the quadrupole moment of 93Ge, the only magnetic isotope, which has severely limited the range of molecules studied, while the immense number of compounds with silicon-oxygen bonds has no parallel among the other elements of the group.
