Abstract
The ideal screening test for early detection of carcinoma of the prostate would be non-invasive and preferable could be performed on readily available biological fluids, e.g., serum, urine, prostatic fluid. When considering an ideal test it is also important to study it in a correct statistical manner and not only calculate the sensitivity and specificity of the study but also the positive and negative predictive values. These terms will be discussed in more detail in the following paragraphs. Finally, progressive or potentially progressive disease must be identified and differentiated from non-progressive or non-lethal disease. Obviously patients in the former category would be treated differently than those in the latter group.
