Why Fusion Assays Disagree

  • Chapter

Abstract

Membrane fusion can be viewed as a process involving several stages (Nir et al., 1983; DUzgUnes and Bentz, 1987):

  1. (i)

    Adhesion or aggregation of the membranes;

  2. (ii)

    Molecular contact between the membranes;

  3. (iii)

    Membrane destabilization in the area of contact;

  4. (iv)

    Intermixing of membrane components;

  5. (v)

    Coalescence of the internal aqueous contents of the compartments bounded by the membranes.
