Leishmaniasis

Abstract

Visceral leishmaniasis is a fatal disease, generally caused by the parasite Leishmania donovanl. This disease is typified by anemia, Irregular fever and hepatosplenomegaly1,2. Patients with visceral leishmaniasis are immunosuppressed and fail to mount delayed-type skin hypersensitivity reactions to leishmanial antigen. However, hyperglobulinemia is a characteristic feature of the disease and globulin levels as high as 5g per 100 ml have been noted. Although leishmanial specific antibodies are present most of the antibody is not parasite specific and is thought to result from polyclonal B cell stimulation.1ā€“3
