Abstract

There has been remarkable little progress in the management of patients with common solid tumors over the last 20 years. Surgery and radiotherapy have reached a peak of therapeutic effectiveness whilst the benefits of systemic treatment using drugs or hormones have reached a therapeutic plateau in tumors such as those of the breast, lung and colon. The reason for this is the lack of selectivity of currently available systemic agents. The closeness of the biochemical properties of tumor cells to their normal counterparts has made the successful development of anti-cancer agents an elusive quest.
