Solar Proton Event Forecasts
The Sun, although some 93,000,000 miles away, is the source of all life on Earth, and solar activity generally is harmless to its inhabitants. In space, however, the environment is not so benign; the effects of some solar events can be hazardous to biological systems. In particular, large solar flares can accelerate particles which can significantly alter the particulate radiation levels in space and consequently increase the radiation dose of space travelers [Rust, 1982 and Kovalev, 1983]. A single anomolously large (AL) Solar Particle Event (SPE) can be the dominant part of the dose received during an entire mission. Knowledge of these events, therefore, is an important input in assessing the risks to manned space flight, especially for those space missions that leave the magnetic shielding of the Earth.
