Cerebellar Astrocytomas

Part of the book series: Foundations of Neurological Surgery ((FONS,volume 3))

Abstract

Cerebellar astrocytomas occupy a fascinating niche in the history of neurosurgical oncology. One has only to read the case histories of Bailey and Cushing in their classic monograph on gliomas to realize that this particular brain tumor was associated with the largest postoperative survival periods of any glial neoplasm [1], Cushing also remarked that a “cure” was possible if the mural tumor nodule was removed from its cystic cavity [2].
