The introduction described the real-time requirements of multimedia systems and the huge size of audio and video data. A computer system used for continuous media processing has to be able to cope with streams with data rates of several Mbit/s and provide timely processing guarantees, for instance such that it can synchronize audio and video streams up to a granularity of about 80 ms [Steinmetz 93].
