Abstract
The reverse channel of narrowband PCS is shared among all of the portable units, which use the channel to access a collection of base receivers. Multiple portable units may transmit simultaneously in the same frequency channel, giving rise to strong co-channel interference. The movement of portables causes variations in signal powers, as well as phase noise. The combined effects of noise, fading, co-channel interference, shadowing and other phenomena have not been exhaustively considered in the literature. In this paper, we discuss development of models of multiple co-channel interference based on measurements of single and double co-channel interferers. We then describe a Monte Carlo simulation through which one can assess packet success rate and other performance measures as a function of important system parameters, such as the modulation scheme, the signaling rate, and the error-correction code deployed. We also provide a collection of simulation results and discuss their implications.
