Pathologic Alterations of the Heart in Diabetes Mellitus

  • Chapter
The Heart in Diabetes

Part of the book series: Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine ((DICM,volume 185))

Abstract

The different clinical and pathologic manifestations of diabetes mellitus have fascinated those interested in this disease, regardless of their specific area of concentration. The severity of this systemic disease is reflected in the well known renal, retinal, neurologic and immune system consequences of diabetes. Improvements in the treatment of renal, metabolic, and infectious complications have increased the longevity of these patients, making heart disease an increasingly important contributor to the morbidity and mortality of diabetes.
