Malignant Effusions in the Chest

Abstract

The accumulation of fluid in the pleural or pericardial space, as a result of either cancer or its treatment, leads to a progressive reduction in the ability of the patient to oxygenate. This inability to oxygenate, first manifested as dyspnea on exertion, is a result of reduced cardiac output or compromised pulmonary reserve. Although the end result of progressive respiratory failure is the same, the presenting signs and symptoms of malignant pleural or pericardial effusions differ (Table 21–1) [1,2].
