Abstract
Critical nuclei in condensation from the vapor are usually extremely small in size so that the homogeneous properties of the bulk liquid are probably not attained even at the center. Hence, the validity of the thermodynamic method to compute the reversible work to form a critical nucleus becomes questionable. On the other hand, they are not small enough to allow direct evaluation of the partition function with the sufficient accuracy. Thus, those critical nuclei present the characteristic size range where neither the macroscopic thermodynamics nor the statistical mechanics is straightforwardly applicable.
