On Volume Phase Transition in Gels

Abstract

Gels can undergo a volume phase change with varying some parameter such as the temperature T, the degree of ionization, or the pH.1 The phase transition has been observed under the condition of zero osmotic pressure. It is mostly of first order and the critical point can be approached by appropriately adjusting external conditions. The equilibrium aspect can be’well understood by Floryf’s theory2 as shown by Tanaka. The aim here is to present preliminary analysis on (i) the phase transition occurring in anisotropically deformed gels and on (ii) the critical dynamics.
