Abstract

String field theory has recently become of considerable interest due to the need to distinguish between the plethora of different string theories1 constructed in the last year or so. It is necessary to use both experimental data and theoretical ingenuity to distinguish between this host of possible models of quantum gravity. Part of this ingenuity may be by way of non-perturbative analyses (tunneling effects through instantons, etc.). In order to see if such non-perturbative effects are helpful a non-perturbative approach to strings is essential. Various avenues for this have been put forward, in particular the elegant formulation in terms of projective vector bundles over universal moduli space2 and its related approach through Grassmannian3 or loop space4 techniques.
