Orbifold Compactification Toward Standard Model

Abstract

Superstrings are supposed to be a candidate theory for unifying all known interactions. It will fail to be a physical theory if it turns out to be successful only for gravity. Therefore, the ultimate hope is to find a standard model from the string approach. One route to this objective is to go through D=10 N=l supergravity compactified on a Calabi -Yau space.1 Another more promising approach is to obtain 4 dimensional string models through orbifold compactifications.2,3
