Abstract
A theory of heterosexual transvestism should attempt to explain the origins of this syndrome, the developmental process which seems basic to its many expressions, and the ultimate behaviors which emerge. It should encompass the entire range of transvestic behavior, from fetishism through secondary transsexualism. Of greatest importance is the necessity to conceptualize heterosexual transvestism as a multistage developmental process, heavily dependent upon cognitive structures, and as a means of generating intense positive reinforcement and changes in mood.
