Abstract

The ground state of liquid 3He is studied within the framework of the variational theory. A trial wave function containing spin dependent correlations in addition to the pair, triplet and backflow correlations, fournishes results for the binding energy and the liquid structure function which are in very close agreement with the experimental data. The interplay of backflow and spin dependent correlations is analysed from the variational point of view. Preliminary results obtained by using correlated basis perturbation theory in the cases of a correlation operator of the Jastrow + Triplet and Jastrow + Triplet + Backflow type are also presented. The importance of orthogonalization amongst the correlated states is discussed.
