Abstract

The representation of the Poincaré algebra presented in the previous chapter was found to lead to an inconsistent theory. In order to obtain a consistent theory, we need to change expression (2.50) for p- so as to avoid tachyons. The most natural approach is to introduce a set of anticommuting harmonic oscillators such that their zero-point fluctuations compensate those from the commuting oscillators.
