Abstract

In recent years Gd3+ compounds were studied not only because of the fundamental interest in these compounds, but also for their practical use as lamp phosphors. Measurements on GdB306:Bi, Tb were performed to elucidate the energy transfer and energy migration mechanisms that occur in this material. Spectral measurements and measurements on the temperature dependence of the Gd3+ emission show that at least two Gd3+ traps are present. A shallow one (~80 cm-l) and a deep one (~500 cm-l). Decay measurements of the Gd3+ emission and the Tb3+ emission show that the energy migration among the Gd3+ ions on the 3-dimensional Gd3+ sublattice is of the fast diffusion type, not only at 290K but also at 4.5K.
