Abstract

An increased incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome in patients on long term heamodialysis treatment has been recently reported.1,2 Amyloid deposition has been observed in the perineural tissue of the mediam nerve in the majority of these patients at time of surgery.2,3 Recent evidence indicate that β2-microglobulin (β2M) is the major precursor protein in this new form of amyloid. The pathogenesis has been related to the persistenly raised plasma β2M concentrations, observed in CRF patients and its possibly low clearance during hemodialysis.2–5
