Abstract
In this paper we investigate the quantum effects in the interaction of a single mode electomagnetic field with a nonlinear medium modelled as anharmonic oscillator with quartic anharmonicity. This model can describe a number of situations. For example, it can describe a highly excited Rydberg atom making transitions between close lying levels. It also describes a field propagating in a Kerr medium having space inversion symmetry. We assume that the anharmonicity parameter q and the atom-field coupling constant g are much smaller than the frequency w of the field so that the rotating wave approximation can be made.
