Conflict Resolution in Group Decision Making: A Rule-Based Approach to Analysis and Support

A conflict is an interaction of interdependent people who perceive their goals as incompatible and expect interference from each other in achieving these goals (Folger and Poole, 1984). Interdependence means that the actions of one group member impacts on the actions of other members (Putnam, 1986). In this paper we discuss the problem of conflict resolution by groups and how it may be supported. As an example we use conflict resolution by a group of experts who prepare a negotiation strategy. The proposed approach differs from that of Bui (1985), Jarke et al. (1987), Raiffa (1982), for example, in that we focus on the support of problem representation, verification of the consistency of this representation, and on the process of restructuring the problem. We assume that the group faces a complex problem and that all group members agree on the overall goal. The conflict exists because group members have different and possibly opposing perceptions of the goal; they attribute different subgoals to the goal and propose different goal/subgoal resolutions.
