Abstract

Berry has shown that topological obstructions in parameter space for systems described by adiabatically varying parameter dependent Hamiltonians induce non-integrable phase changes in pure states. We study the effect of such obstructions in those descriptions of quantum states which allow for the introduction of mixtures and consider the question of the general character of measurements in which the topological phase manifests itself in the final collapsed density matrix.
