Abstract
Aspergillus fumigatus catalase has been identified as an important antigen in pulmonary aspergillosis (PA) associated with a fungus ball or a lung infiltrate, and a rapid immuno-electrophoretic assay for catalase antibodies (“bubblography”) has been developed (H. Schonheyder, P. Andersen, J.C. Munck Petersen, 1985, Eur. J. Clin. Microbiol., 4:299). The diagnostic sensitivity for PA, excluding allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, was 88% and the diagnostic specificity was 94%. The catalase antibody assay is well suited to the diagnostic laboratory, and a 2-year experience with the assay is reviewed with special reference to the correlation between catalase-specific antibodies and precipitins.
