Allergens of Aspergillus Fumigatus

  • Chapter
Fungal Antigens

Abstract

The word ‘allergen’ was originally introduced to indicate any substance that gave rise to an immunologically altered response i.e. any of the four types of specific hypersensitivity reactions as defined by Gell & Coombs (1975). However, more recently the word has become synonymous with “atopic allergen” meaning those substances that give rise to Type I immediate hypersensitivity reactions mediated by IgE antibody, i.e. “antigens that react with IgE antibodies”.
