Dynamical X-Ray Diffraction Study on the Phase Transformation in Rapidly Quenched Au71Sn29 Alloy

Abstract

Materials can be obtained in a non-equilibrium state by means of rapid quenching as e.g. amorphous alloys, metastable phases, supersaturated solutions. These alloys undergo phase transformation into the stable state by heat treatment. In the case of rapidly quenched Au71Sn29 drastic changes of the mechanical properties already at room temperature are observed. The alloy shows elastic behaviour after its formation, but it becomes brittle after about 10 minutes. The aim of this work was to investigate the structural development of rapidly quenched Au71Sn29 as a function of time.
