The Nature of Distribution of Ribonucleotide Reductases

  • Chapter
  • 50 Accesses

Abstract

Ribonucleotide reductases catalyze the irreversible reduction of the 2’-hydroxyl group of ribonucleoside 5’-phosphates to the corresponding 2’-deoxyribonucleoside 5’-phosphates. This reaction is a prerequisite for DNA replication and thus controls the S phase of a cell cycle and cell proliferation. It seems reasonable that all prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms utilize the same pathway for DNA precursor biosynthesis. It is still not known, however, how many different enzyme systems occur in the different phyla, and the exact mechanism of ribonucleotide reduction is not yet understood.
