Chromosomal Rearrangements Affecting the Regulation of Uridine Phosphorylase Gene Expression in Escherichia Coli

The structural gene udp encoding uridine phosphorylase (EC is located at 85 min on the E. coli chromosome (Bachmann, 1983). This enzyme catalyzes the phosphorolysis of uridine and also has some specificity for deoxyuridine and, to a lesser extent, for thymidine (Beachem and Pritchard, 1971). Furthermore, under conditions of constitutive synthesis in a thymine auxotroph deficient in thymidine phosphorylase (the deoA gene), uridine phosphorylase can catalyze the conversion of thymine to thymidine (Sukhodolets, Galeis and Smirnov, 1973).
