Abstract

At the moment of ejaculation, muscular spasms propel a grayish viscous fluid from a male’s body into a female. The fluid is called semen and can contain more sperm than there are people in the United States (about 250 million). Semen is another of nature’s marvelous formulas. Only 2% is sperm. Another 90% is water. The remaining 8% contains various chemicals. Some neutralize the foreign acidity of the female’s vaginal fluids making the new environment more hospitable for its sperm; others trigger spasms in the walls of the vaginal tunnel catapulting sperm onward. Still others bathe sperm in enzymes to give them energy for the arduous race ahead. And it is arduous, make no mistake about it.
