Abstract

Chronic mastitis is a severe veterinary problem due to frequent relapses and a variable response to antibiotics. The immunological elimination of pathogens may be impaired. Mastitis may even present as “sterile” inflammation, without apparent involvement of bacteria (1), which further stresses the importance of nonspecific resistance. Our approach to the problem has been to find tissue factors that predispose to infection and might help in the struggle against the disease.
