Vaccines

Chlamydia

Abstract

The development of chlamydial vaccines is generally considered desirable since C. trachomatis and C. psittaci are common pathogens and chlamydial infections can result in severe complications. The prospectives for such vaccines from a molecular standpoint have recently been discussed by Ward and associates (1988). Until recently, C. trachomatis vaccine studies and trials mainly focused on prevention of trachoma. Some of these study groups progressed to human field trials (Grayston et al., 1964; Guerra et al., 1967; Soldati et al., 1971; Grayston, 1971; Nichols and Snyder, 1971; Bietti et al., 1972; Collier, 1972). However, because the results were not promising, trachoma prevention is now being approached mainly by other means, i.e., by education and treatment.
