High Frequency Capillary Waves on Liquid Surfaces: A Light Scattering Study
Capillary waves have long been used as a probe of suoh liquid properties as surface tension and viscosity. Certain specifically surface effects can affect the propagation of such waves. It will be shown that waves of small wavelength and high frequency should be most susceptible to these effects. Thermally excited capillary waves scatter light, permitting experimental observations at rather high frequencies. This paper reports a study of high frequency capillary waves on various fluids for which surface effects have been reported or might plausibly be expected.
