Abstract

The term viral hepatitis denotes those infections caused by agents whose primary tissue tropism is the liver and includes five distinct disease entities caused by at least five viruses. Hepatitis A is an acute self-limited disease caused by infection with hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis B results from infection with hepatitis B virus, and following the acute infection, a proportion of infected individuals becomes persistently infected with the virus, at risk of chronic liver disease and primary liver cancer. The etiologic agent of delta hepatitis is the “incomplete” delta virus, which requires the presence of hepatitis B virus in order to replicate and produce infection. Non-A, Non-B hepatitis is a diagnosis of exclusion, and disease entities have been defined epidemiologically. Infection that results from the currently undefined agent(s) that are parenterally transmitted usually becomes persistent and results in chronic liver disease. The other form of Non-A, Non-B hepatitis results from infection with a newly defined agent, which is transmitted enterically and produces an acute, apparently self-limited, disease.
