Abstract

The lens as neomorph has been formed in at least nine systematic groups of metazoa (De Jong, 1981). It provides a convenient experimental model for the study of mechanisms of organ and tissue formation during evolution. The structural proteins of the vertebrate lens, or crystallins, and genes coding for them have been intensively studied (Wistow and Piatigorsky, 1988). Similar data from other systematic groups are scarce (Siezen and Shaw, 1982; Piatigorsky et al., 1989). This paper deals with characteristics of the major polypeptides of the squid and octopus lenses, obtained by cDNA cloning and sequencing.
