Abstract

For 10 years now, in vitro fertilization (IVF) with subsequent embryo transfer (ET) has been successfully used in treated infertility. ET rates of between 70% and 80% testify to the progress obtained in IVF and embryo culture. Despite these advances made in recent years, the pregnancy rate after IVF is hardly higher than 20% per treatment cycle, even in the cases of experienced teams.1,2 A comparison with the pregnancy rate per cycle under in vivo conditions, however, shows that the prospects per treatment cycle are not more favourable here either.
