Abstract
Increased induction and accumulation of DNA damage remain central concepts to many of the biological theories of aging (Gensler and Bernstein, 1981; Kirkwood, 1989). Cytogenetic techniques, which offer the ability to evaluate damage across the entire genome at the single cell level, have been utilized by numerous investigators to determine whether or not there is evidence of increased DNA damage with increasing in-vivo age. The data from these different laboratories have not yielded a consensus conclusion regarding age effects for sister chromatid exchange (SCE) or chromosomal aberration rates (Schneider, 1985; Tice and Setlow, 1985). What they have, however, clearly documented are the marked individual differences within age groups and the significant overlap in responses between age groups. Such individual variation argues for aging studies aimed not merely at classifying average aging effects, but those which also aim to understand and investigate the factors contributing to variability in aged populations.
