Abstract

The review covers the recent advances in the plasma physics of the large tokamak experiments, of reverse field pinches, and of stellarators, relevant to their potential to form the basis of a fusion reactor. All these systems are, of course, toroidal magnetic confinement systems. The first two are toroidal pinch discharges and are axisymmetric, whereas the stellarators have no confining toroidal pinch current, but have non-axisymmetric magnetic fields to perform the plasma-confining function.
