Abstract

In studying the regulated patterns of gene expression in higher plants, molecular biologists employ a variety ofin vitro tools. The accumulation, distribution and decay of various gene products are monitored through the use of immunological and electrophoretic techniques. The interactions of these gene products can sometimes be observed. Cloned copies of interesting and important genes can be used to follow the accumulation and disappearance of specific messenger RNAs. But in many ways, such studies are merely descriptive. In order to achieve full understanding of the mechanisms which regulate gene expression, researchers need a means to determine cause and effect, a means to introduce a change at the molecular level and to observe its effect(s) on gene expression.
