An Integrated Stimulus Generation and Data Acquisition System for the Investigation of Auditory Evoked Magnetic Fields

Abstract

For the investigation of biomagnetic activity evoked by sensory stimuli (event related fields) usally two independent systems are used: a stimulus generator and a data acquisition system, consisting of SQUID sensor and electronics, analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and data acquisition computer. In general, the data acquisition process has to be interrupted if any stimulation or recording parameter is to be changed. This fact places considerable restrictions on the design of experimental procedures. For example, a complete randomization of stimuli is not feasible. Besides that, intermediate results as obtained by on-line analysis of the experimental data collected so far cannot be used for automatically controlling the further progress of the experiment. To avoid such restrictions, we have developed, for studies of the auditory system, an integrated stimulus generation and data acquisition system, which supports in a very flexible way almost any kind of experimental design.
