Abstract

In the framework of Pariser-Parr-Pople π-electron Hamiltonian the spin Hamiltonian (of the Heisenberg type) is obtained for conjugated polymers with half filled π-electron band. Using the spin Hamiltonian the dimerization of molecules like poly-acetylene is treated as spin-Peierls instability. The conditions are studied under which the ground state of π-electron system is ferromagnetic.
