Abstract

Receptors for neurotransmitters found in the surface membranes of excitable cells, such as neurones, muscle fibres and endocrine cells exhibit desensitization or tachyphylaxis when exposed to high concentrations of agonists. This phenomenon of agonist-induced refractoriness has been best studied for the nicotinic and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors of vertebrate animals, although it has not yet been fully evaluated for any transmitter receptor.
