Abstract
The structure and phase transitions of lipid monolayers are described combining recent data from X-ray, surface potential and quantitative analysis of fluorescence microscopic measurements. It is shown that peculiar domain shapes and superstructures observed can be understood from a competition between line energy and long-range electrostatic repulsion. The latter can be calculated from the surface potential difference measured for the coexisting phases. It is shown that the phase coexisting with the fluid phase undergoes an ordering transition at a distinct pressure πs. This may correspond to ordering and dehydration of the lipid head groups.
