Abstract
Understanding the dynamical properties of nuclei and the underlying nuclear force are longstanding important issues in nuclear physics and clearly of central interest. Since the seminal work of Yukawa about the role of the pion as the mediator of the nuclear force, considerable work has been done to clarify in a quantitative way its basic nature. With increasing energies and momentum transfers a certain breakdown of an only nucleon picture will occur and effects of subnucleonic degrees of freedom such as of mesons and quarks are expected to be detectable in appropriately chosen measurements of the system. Evidence has indeed been presented that the dynamical behaviour of the nucleus cannot be described in terms of only nucleonic degrees of freedom. Also in the kinematic regions of medium and high energies effects of special relativity are expected to play a role and accordingly a proper microscopic description of the nucleus is needed.
