Accurate quantitative analysis of the composition and dynamics of the atmosphere is crucial in our assessment of the quality of the environment and our judgement of the success of those measures taken to reduce pollution. Many of the techniques used to analyse the environment are based upon our knowledge of the molecular spectroscopy of atmospheric species. However there remain many atmospheric molecules for which data is, at best, fragmentary and often is completely absent.
